Let's think about the different uses of and . /Japanese Learning Support LLC
Let's think about the difference between and !
●I swam in the river.
●I swam in the river.
Both of these two sentences are correct.
But the meaning is slightly different. Let's think about the difference.
I'm sure you've learned sentences such as ``I studied in the classroom'' that use ``place + with + verb'' in your elementary school textbooks.
So, what? When you want to say that you did some action (verb) in that place, don't you use "de"? Is there also a sentence for “location + wo”? Some of you may have thought so.
Today, I will explain the difference between the two!
Today's menu
1 “De” is a place or scope limitation

As you all know, "de" represents a place.
Let's take a look at how to use it.
Sample1 I bought a necktie at a department store.
Sample2 We played tennis in the park.
Sample3 I prefer eating at home than eating at restaurants.
Sample4 It feels good to have a picnic in the mountains.
Sample5 It's dangerous to play on the street!
That's a simple sentence. Performed a certain action in that place, such as ``buying a tie'' or ``playing tennis''...
There are nuances such as not moving from a certain place for a certain period of time.
Tennis, of course, moves your body, but you don't hit the park while playing tennis.
"De" includes the meaning of performing an action within a certain place or range.
On the other hand, what about "wo"?

The first thing I would like to tell you is that "wo" is not a place, but a passing point.
It has the meaning of moving through one place or going to another place.
Let's also look at an example.
Sample1 Walk along Omotesando.
Sample2 Would you like to take a walk in the park?
Sample3 I want to fly in the sky like a bird.
Sample4 The library is located when you cross that bridge and turn the first corner.
Sample5 For this marathon, all you have to do is run three laps around your school.
If you look at the example sentences for "wo", do you notice that they all have verbs that express movement such as "walk" or "cross" at the end?
that's right. ``wo'' has the nuance of moving from one place to another.
Therefore, "wo" is not often used when you are not moving.
For example, in this sentence, "Fly like a bird," we used "wo".
Birds can freely fly here and there, so it has the meaning of movement in it.
"Fly" here means fly.
However, the Japanese word "fly" also has another meaning of jumping. Jumping can be done in the same place, so when there is no meaning of movement, we sometimes use "jump on the trampoline" and "de".
There was also an example sentence, ``Run three laps around the school in a marathon.'' This also requires running around the school, so we use ``wo.''
If you are running on a treadmill at a training gym, the action of "running" is not moving inside the gym, so you can say "I run at the gym."
Now, let's look at the first sentence again.
●I swam in the river.
●I swam in the river.
I think everyone who has studied up to this point already understands!
The first ``de'' means that they swam and played in the same place in the river.
The second ``wo'' means that they moved by swimming in the river.
For example, it's like swimming from one shore to another.

Make natural sentences by putting either "de" or "wo" in parentheses.
I will write the answer at the bottom of the blog.
① Today we will spend the day at an amusement park ( ).
② I usually work remotely from home.
③ Ah, it's a shorter cut to take that road ( ).
④ Oh, what should I do? Concert venue () I think I lost my wallet.
⑤ (Looking at the picture of the mountain) Oh, are you going to climb this mountain ( ) next time? That's tough!
⑥ My father has traveled across many oceans.
Was the problem easy?
Once you have solved all the questions, look at the answers below and check if they are correct.

Today, we introduced the different uses of "de" and "wo."
``de'' is used after a place, but ``wo'' is used when there is a meaning of passing or moving.
On this blog, let's use "de" and "wo" wisely to talk about where we went, what we did, and where we went today!
