By the way, I'm sure many of you are on vacation during the Obon holidays, but are you doing your best to learn Japanese? If you've been learning a lot of Japanese, it's a good idea to take a break and absorb Japanese through books, music, and anime!

I would like to introduce one story this time as well to help you learn. I hope you enjoy it. The one I would like to introduce is "The Centipede's errand".

Think before you read.

Previously, I introduced some types of birds and animals in this blog, but this time I will introduce the names of insects. How many insect names do you know? In this story, insects that you don't usually hear about appear, so please imagine what kind of insects they are as you read.

"A centipede's errand"

One day, the insects gathered and were bragging.

"The one who sings with the best voice is me, Lean Lean."

Suzumushi said that Matsumushi was not defeated either.

"Oh, it's me. Chinchirorin."

“No, it’s me!

Even the stag beetle began to sing.

Then,

"Hey, look! Look at these feathers rather than singing! I'm prettier than anyone else, aren't I?"

The swallowtail butterfly spread its wings and said,

Grasshoppers, crickets, ants, bees, and even pill bugs.

At that moment, a caterpillar began to growl, holding its stomach.

"Attach... my stomach hurts. I feel like I'm about to burst."

"Are you okay?"

Everyone gathered around the caterpillar and peered in anxiously.

"I must call the doctor immediately!"

"Who do you want me to go to?"

"I like centipedes. They have many legs, so they can run the fastest."

“Mukade-kun, can you come over?”

Everyone asked the centipede.

"Okay. I'll call the doctor!"

Centipede hurriedly started wearing straw sandals.

"come on!"

Everyone encouraged the caterpillar.

"It's time for the doctor to come."

"Isn't it funny?"

When I looked, the centipede was playing around with the straw sandals.

"Hello, welcome back. Gokuro-san."

"So where's the doctor?"

Then, the centipede dripped sweat and said to everyone.

"He's not back. He's wearing straw sandals. He has so many legs. He's only half wearing them."

"Gege!"

All the insects were stunned and turned over.

How was it.

This is a funny story that is also told in rakugo. Were you able to imagine the characteristics of the insects in the story and their conversations? It's interesting that even centipedes have to wear straw sandals to go out like humans.

From here, I will introduce what kind of insect the centipede, which is the main character of today, is.

It is said that there are about 3,000 types of centipedes in the world, so I think many people have seen them. When written in kanji, it is '百足', literally an insect with many legs.

Although the kanji character ``百'' is used, the actual number varies depending on the type, ranging from 12 pairs (total of 24 left and right) to 107 pairs (total of 340 left and right). I'm not good with insects, so imagining a centipede with 107 pairs of legs gives me chills.

Centipedes do not have wings, so they do not fly like butterflies or bees, but they are carnivorous and eat other insects instead of grass. If we touch the centipede and irritate it, it may bite us, so be careful. I've never been bitten, but I've heard that it hurts a lot and the bitten area feels numb and itchy. If you don't provoke them, they won't bite you, so if you find them, leave them alone.

This is the season when insects are most active. Were you interested in insects when you were a child? When I was a child, I remember summer vacations as bug catching and chasing dragonflies and butterflies. I hate insects now, but I still feel summer when I hear the cicadas at this time of year, and when the chirping beetles start to sing, it's already autumn. Insects are closely related to our lives and can be said to be an important existence that informs us of the changes of the four seasons.

Today, I introduced a story called "The centipede's errand".
